OVERVIEW

True 5-Axis Machining for Geometry that 3-Axis Cannot Reach

Impellers, blisks, blades and robotics joints carry swept surfaces and undercut features that require the cutter to meet the part from many angles. Our simultaneous 5-axis centres keep the tool normal to the surface while moving all five axes, while 3+2 indexed machining handles multi-sided prismatic parts in a single clamping — from one prototype to serial production.

🌀

Simultaneous 5-Axis Milling

All five axes move together to cut continuous free-form surfaces on impellers, blisks, blades and turbine parts, holding a consistent cutter angle and smooth finish across complex curved geometry.

🧭

3+2 Indexed Machining

For multi-sided prismatic parts, the two rotary axes position the part at a fixed angle and the three linear axes machine. This reaches several faces in one setup without the cost of full simultaneous motion.

⚙️

Fewer Setups, Higher Accuracy

Machining five sides in one clamping removes the tolerance stack-up and alignment errors caused by repeated re-fixturing, shortening lead time and improving positional accuracy on complex parts.

SURFACE FINISH

Finishes for 5-Axis Parts

We coordinate the finish your application requires, in-house or through qualified partners, to a defined standard or Ra value.

Anodising (Type II / III)

Clear, coloured or hard-anodised aluminium surfaces for corrosion and wear resistance, including black, red and blue cosmetic finishes with masking of precision bores.

Passivation / Polishing

Citric/nitric passivation and electropolishing for stainless and titanium medical, food and corrosion-critical parts, restoring the passive layer after machining.

Bead Blasting / Brushing

Uniform satin, bead-blasted or brushed surfaces that remove tool marks and deliver a consistent, low-glare cosmetic finish on housings and visible parts.

Polishing & High Finish

Mechanical polishing to low Ra values for mould surfaces, impellers and cosmetic components, with controlled direction and measured roughness.

Special Coatings

PVD, DLC, powder coating, Teflon/PTFE impregnation and nickel/Teflon plating for wear release, anti-galling and low-friction applications.

As Machined / Ra Values

Standard machined finish with defined Ra (typical Ra 0.8–1.6), with tighter surface requirements met through finish passes and verified by measurement.

FAQ

5-Axis CNC Machining FAQ

Practical answers from our engineering team. Still unsure? Send your drawing and ask.

What is the difference between simultaneous 5-axis and 3+2 machining?
Simultaneous (continuous) 5-axis moves all five axes at once to cut swept surfaces such as impeller blades. In 3+2 (indexed) machining, the two rotary axes position the part at a fixed angle and then the three linear axes machine. We recommend full 5-axis for true free-form geometry and 3+2 for multi-sided prismatic parts, which is faster and more economical.
Which parts benefit most from 5-axis CNC machining?
Impellers, blisks, blades, turbine components, medical implants with organic surfaces, robot joints, complex moulds and any part with features on several faces or undercut angles. 5-axis reaches these in one setup, improving accuracy and finish where 3-axis would need multiple fixtures.
Can you 5-axis machine titanium and Inconel?
Yes. We routinely machine titanium Ti-6Al-4V and nickel alloys such as Inconel using rigid, high-torque setups, sharp wear-resistant tooling, high-pressure coolant and conservative, controlled cuts to manage heat and tool wear.
What tolerance and surface finish do you hold on 5-axis parts?
Our standard tolerance follows ISO 2768-mK and we routinely hold ±0.01 mm on critical features, with a typical surface finish of Ra 0.8–1.6. Finer finishes and tighter tolerances are achieved through finish passes and verified by CMM and surface measurement.
Does 5-axis machining reduce cost compared to multiple 3-axis setups?
For complex multi-sided parts, yes. Completing five faces in one clamping removes repeated fixturing and manual alignment, cuts total cycle and lead time, and eliminates tolerance stack-up. For simple parts a 3-axis approach may be more economical — our DFM review recommends the most cost-effective process.
Do you provide material certificates and CMM reports?
Yes. Mill test certificates (EN 10204 3.1), first-article inspection reports and CMM dimensional reports with measured values are available on request, so aerospace and medical 5-axis parts are fully traceable and documented.
What file formats do you accept for 5-axis quoting?
We accept STEP, STP, IGES/IGS, X_T, SLDPRT, PRT, DWG, DXF, STL and PDF, plus compressed archives. 3D solid models are preferred for complex 5-axis geometry so we can verify tool access and program the rotary axes accurately.
How do you ship 5-axis parts to the USA and Europe?
We ship worldwide by DHL/FedEx/UPS, air or sea freight under EXW, FOB or DDP terms. DDP deliveries to Germany, France, Italy, Spain and other EU countries include customs clearance and import duty for true door-to-door delivery. Complex prototypes typically ship in 7–12 working days.
